How to communicate the eviction ban extension

Further extension to the ban on landlords evicting tenants during tougher COVID-19 measures

At the beginning of the first lockdown in March, nearly a year ago now, the government announced the initial ban on evictions. This has since been extended three times last year, with the latest extension taking the total to four.

The aim from the government is to protect tenants, who are struggling as a result of the pandemic, and ensure they remain with a roof over their head during the tougher times we’re facing. The Ministry of Housing has stated that no evictions should take place in England until 8 March at the earliest, whilst Scotland and Wales have extended this until 31 March.

In December, a “Christmas truce” was announced that prevented bailiffs from serving notices and enforcing evictions, and was due to end on 11 January. However, the government faced increasing pressure from tenants and housing charities to continue this due to the increase in COVID-19 cases and tougher measures.

How should you inform your clients about this?

We would recommend sending an email campaign to a filter that contains both landlords and tenants. This will ensure that they are made aware of these changes, and how they will be affected. As a guide on how to structure your eviction ban campaign, here is an example.

As the pandemic causes changes every day, it’s important you’re consistently communicating with your clients where possible. This will ensure they’re aware you’re still able to assist them with their property needs, despite the tightened restrictions we’re facing.
