Behind the scenes with our IT Support team

it-support-2

Behind BriefYourMarket.com, we have a dedicated team of marketing and technology professionals, and so in our latest ‘meet the team’ edition, we’d like to introduce you to our IT Support Analyst, Sam Harding.

Having started over a year and a half ago as an apprentice, Sam has quickly progressed within the business, achieving recognition for his hard work as our Star of the Month, and here’s what he has to say about his time at BYM…

What is your job role at BYM?

My job title is IT Support Analyst, and – in a nutshell – it involves problem-solving for both our customers and other staff members here at BriefYourMarket.com.

So, if a customer raises a technical issue to Customer Care, it is then passed onto me and my team members.

Some of the projects that I work on require input from multiple parties. For example, I will liaise with the client and our partners, and – depending on the nature of the project – other areas of the business. So, being proactive really helps.

Tell us about some of your typical projects…

If a customer experiences an issue with the system, we can assist them over the phone, live chat or email, and we’ll also use screensharing so that we can speed up the process and identify what the quickest solution for the customer would be.

We work closely with partners to ensure that the integrations run smoothly, bringing our clients’ data across and improving usability for them.

Although we deal with a lot of ad hoc work, there’s a lot of proactive work too, which is providing solutions before there’s a problem. This can be achieved by providing our customers with more guides – to build their understanding of the system – and creating enhanced reports on errors internally so that we can continually develop our platform.

How did you find balancing an apprenticeship with working at BYM?

Balancing my apprenticeship was fairly easy at the start of the course. When the GDPR came into force in May, I was required to prioritise work in order to make sure that deadlines were hit, as a lot of preparation was needed to get our customers ready for the new regulation.

However, my managers were very understanding and supportive, and ensured that I had time set aside to focus on my course and training.

What skills have you developed while working here?

Since starting, I have developed numerous skills in a range of areas.

A few examples of these are that I have been encouraged to take on new challenges and think outside of the box, which has helped to develop my decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.

I’ve improved my communication skills and now feel confident talking to customers in a wide range of industries using their own terms and jargon. I can also now use Structured Query Language (SQL), which is the standard language used to examine data.

What do you do in your down time at work?

We have a breakout area in the office where me and a few others go to relax during our lunch. I can often be found in there playing a friendly game of pool, or walking to the local butchers for some quality food to help me through the rest of the day.

There’s also a really friendly atmosphere at our desks too, as well as work events throughout the year.

What makes BYM a good place to work, and what is your favourite part?

I think one of the best aspects of working at BriefYourMarket.com is the community feel. Because my job role involves working with numerous different departments, you get to know people easily, and quickly become a member of the BYM team.

Another thing I like is that no two days are ever the same, so there’s no way you could get bored. Sometimes you’re required to work at a fast pace to ensure everything is solved on time, and other days where there maybe aren’t so many issues you can slow down a bit and focus on more detailed work.

It’s a challenging role but in a good way.

You were recently awarded Star of the Month, could you tell us a bit about that?

I think when it comes to BYM, you get out what you put in. If you work hard and are focused, you will be rewarded.

I think having the Star of the Month award shows the level of community spirit that the business pushes for – as this is something that is nominated by your colleagues and not just managers – and being put forward for that shows just how appreciated you are within your team.

Do you have any tips for someone who wishes to do the same role as you?

I would say that they need to be prepared for the challenge.

Some days can be really fast paced, and you need to be able to think on your feet and not be afraid to take responsibility of tasks.

It’s also important to get involved in discussions and not be too shy to speak up about your ideas, as BriefYourMarket.com really do listen to your input and will take anything you say on board.
